Earth Day 2011

Happy Earth Day!!

The Earth is art!  Do something for our planet today, spend some time in the garden making it a more beautiful and healthy place to live... Plant a tree, some flowers, a cactus or succulent!  That's what I'll be doing... :)

Oh, and if you're a blogger and you haven't heard about the carbon neutral initiative, by the Arbor Day Foundation then check out the link below to read more on it and how you can get a tree planted for your blog in the Plumas National Forest!  You can also read my blog posts on Inspire Bohemia going carbon neutral here and here.

Our Earth

Earthquake zones
Hello world...

I was feeling great today until I just heard the breaking news....  A 7.4 magnitude earthquake has hit near the coast of Honshu, Japan!  As a result, yet another tsunami alert has been issued.  *Sigh*  It's so frightening just thinking about it!  My heart goes out to the people in Japan.

Also, as if that wasn't bad enough, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake hit Veracruz, Mexico today, though fortunately the reports say nothing major occurred other than buildings swaying for a few minutes (but still, holy cow)!  Oh, and there has been radioactive rain falling in South Korea today as a result of the radioactive fallout from Japan's nuclear disaster after the last earthquake and tsunami there last month.

Anyway, I don't know about you but I'm scared.  Our natural disasters have been getting worse and worse, and that realization takes my mind down a very long and uneasy road of thoughts.

I just wanted to take a moment to acknowledge this terrible news and say how bad I feel for the people of Japan and for all the people around the world who have suffered so much in all the disasters of these past few years.  Also, I'd like to say just because I hardly hear about Haiti or the Gulf of Mexico oil spill on the news anymore does not mean I have forgotten!

I feel as though one of humanity's greatest problems in an age of so much bombarding technology, information, entertainment, and responsibilities is that it's so easy to forget that we are at the mercy of this planet.  It's so convenient to just go on with one's life, in a little bubble.  But I try my best not to do that, I don't want to be indifferent to the world's issues, because the world's issues are all of our issues, and if we aren't going to think or worry about them then who will?  It's our job.  With that said, we should all find ways, however small, to start respecting and preserving our planet better.

The current growing environmental movement is typically referred to as the "green" movement, or "going green," but please note that this movement has also brought an onslaught of new "green" products created primarily for profit.  I believe that the big companies knew that this movement was going to be the "next big thing," so they produced tons of new products to feed the fetish (see this New York Times Article called "Buying Into the Green Movement") in order to capitalize on what they knew would surely be a frenzy of human consumption in hopes of helping the planet.  Not to be cynical, but in all likelihood that is the truth and many of us are falling into the trap.  So what I'm saying is, don't go out and buy a bunch of green stuff and buy into the fetish, because initially you'll just be negating your efforts to be green by buying and consuming more than what you already have.  First, figure out free ways to work with what you have, learn ways to become a more responsible consumer and disposer.  Once you've picked up on that, I believe it will be easier to make wise choices when shopping for "green" products without going crazy and spending boatloads of money before knowing what works best for you and your lifestyle.  Just because one buys green products does not necessarily mean they are being green and saving the planet, it could just mean you're buying (consuming) more and spending more if you're not smart about it.

It's a a big challenge and it won't be easy, but it behooves all of us.  With that said, below are some links to help you get started....

Carbon Neutral Confirmation

Back at the end of July I announced in this post that Inspire Bohemia would soon be going carbon neutral! Well, I finally received a response to my e-mail submission confirming that Inspire Bohemia is now carbon neutral and has been added to the list of participants. Basically what this means is that the Make It Green project and Arbor Day Foundation will be planting a tree in Inspire Bohemia's name in the Plumas National Forest of Northern California in order to neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions produced by the Inspire Bohemia blog for the next 50 years! Cool huh? How do they figure one tree will be enough to neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions of one blog for 50 years? Well, check out my blog post from July here for more details, or just take a look at this chart:

(calculated based on a blog with 15,000 visits per month)

Woohoo! Cool right? Here is the confirmation letter I received:

Hi Catherine,

Thank you so much for participating in our initiative and making your blog carbon neutral! Your tree will be planted this month by the Arbor Day Foundation. The scheduled start plant date was Monday, April 19 and the trees will be planted by a contracted crew. The roads are being plowed, all contracts solidified, and twelve shipments of 150,000 seedling each are being assembled. We thank you for the support!

There are still some trees looking for a sponsor. So if you know some people who have a blog or website, pass it on and we'll make their blogs carbon neutral too!

Best,

Melanie
"Make it green"-team

And here is my blog on the participant list, wheeee:

So, if you think this project is as awesome as I do and want your blog or website to be a part of the My Blog Is Carbon Neutral initiative - YOU CAN, visit the following links for more information:

Inspire Bohemia Goes Carbon Neutral!

I am very proud to announce that Inspire Bohemia will soon be Carbon neutral!!

I came across a website by the "Make it Green" program started in Germany that has begun an initiative called "My blog is carbon neutral." The goal of this initiative is to neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions produced by a blog by planting a tree for each participant. Wait, wait... blogs produce carbon dioxide!? At first you may be like ehhh? but if you really think about what goes into powering Bloggers' network of blogs, not to mention the entire internet(!) it then becomes clear.... However, if you need it put into greater perspective just read this quote from the website and check out the diagram below:

"According to a study by Alexander Wissner-Gross, PhD, physicist at Harvard University and environmental activist, an average website causes about 0.02g (0,0008oz.) of carbon dioxide for each visit. Assuming an average blog gets 15,000 visits a month, it has yearly carbon dioxide emissions of 3,6kg (8lb.). This can mainly be tracked back to the immense energy usage from (mainframe) computers, servers, and their cooling systems."

For each blog that joins the "My blog is carbon neutral" initiative, "Make it Green" and their U.S. partner Arbor Day Foundation will plant a tree in the Plumas National Forest of Northern California that will neutralize the carbon dioxide emissions of that blog for the next 50 years! Arbor Day Foundation is a non-profit conservation and education organization that has made it their goal to reforest 5,500 acres of Plumas National Forest with 792,000 trees after terrible fires destroyed over 88,000 of its forested acres back in 2007.

Together, "Make it Green" and Arbor Day Foundation are not only helping reforest the Plumas National Forest, but they're simultaneously enabling ordinary citizens of the world to contribute to the sustenance of our planet's health by neutralizing and thus reducing carbon dioxide emissions. What a wonderful initiative!

According to the "Make it Green" website there are currently 893 blogs participating... Well, I plan on being the 894th!

This is the least I can do to blog responsibly, and I encourage all of you with blogs out there to do the same. If interested, all you need to do is write a blog post on the initiative and post the 'Carbon Neutral' graphic button of your choice on your blog! For detailed instructions on how to participate and make your blog Carbon neutral please visit this link, or any of the following:
